I need help figuring out a base color scheme for this car. Any input will be helpful.

I like the look of this car (http://www.hmracing2002.fsnet.co.uk/pics/whitebluefordl.jpg), but I don't know how to do that checked flag look.

Race Scheme Central (http://raceschemecentral.racesimcentral.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=6) has tons of base schemes for you to choose from. See if you like any over there.

I have always just used the paint shop in the game to paint my cars but I have always been dissappointed by the limited fonts and font sizes. I notice some of you guys use Photoshop. Since I have never been into heavy duty graphics painting and design, I never shelled out for the full version. But I do own photoshop elements, the cheaper version. Does Photoshop Elements have the same painting tools to do cars?

For my Athlon car, I downloaded a new flames scheme from the web site above, resized it to 512 pixels to fit the template in the paintshop in the game, saved as a tga file and applied it to the template as a great big decal. Then I applied numbers, decals, logos, etc to finish up.

Trouble is, since I used the same purple color scheme with the new flames scheme, it looks almost the same. Just a little cleaner. I may go back and use different colors. I am pleased with everything else except it would be nice to have hi-res.

Mostly what I use photoshop for is scanning photos, touchup and resizing. Could some of you photo shop guys offer a little advice about painting?

BTW, on Teamspeak last night some of you guys asked what I do in Colorado. I teach music at CSU and play principal tuba in the Cheyenne Symphony. So if any of you need help with note processing, music arranging, Finale, or playing low brass instruments, I can help. LOL

Thanks ahead of time,
Bob

Whiplash, the number on the roof should be turned the other way. When viewing the top of the car from the grandstands, it should appear upside down. Otherwise, it looks good so far.

Bob, I've never used Photoshop Elements, so I can't really compare it to the full version of Photoshop. One of the biggest advantages to using Photoshop, or even Paint Shop Pro, is layers. With layering capability, the base scheme, decals, numbers, etc. can all be separate. You can make changes to one layer that don't affect anything else.

If Photoshop Elements doesn't support layering, and you can't get a hold of full Photoshop, check out Paint Shop Pro (http://www.jasc.com/). Alot of good painters use that. It appears that you can download a beta version of PSP 8. This (http://community.sierra.com/WebX?14@84.soWvbkCFMtQ.1808014@.ef905c4) thread over at the Sierra NR2003 Painting Forum has links to several tutorials for painting cars in PSP. You may have to register on the Sierra forums if you haven't done so in order to see the thread.

If you are already comfortable with Photoshop Elements and would really like full Photoshop, because you don't want to learn another paint program, let me know. I'm sure I can help you out.

Photoshop Elements does support layering. Can I import my decals from the targa files in the Exports folders?

Now about numbers, do you use a font and write them on as text or do you capture them from websites and apply them as decals?

I have tried to play around with Photoshop but have never understood how to use layering. I'll read up in the areas you have. At some point, I'll send you what I have done. I am not pleased with the contingency stickers on this new car yet. I used the ones provided with the game and didn't get them turned around right for the other side of the car. I am pleased with everything else but would like to make it hi-res.

Maybe one of these days I'll do a CSU Rams car. Then there is always the possibility of a Razorback car....... ;) :argue:

Thanks very much for the advice,
Bob

Yes. You first need to start with a template from Brian Simpson at Team Lightspeed. (http://www.sportplanet.com/team-lightspeed/b_simpson/nr2003_templates.shtml) You can then paint the base scheme and add your decals and numbers.

For numbers, I typically use a font. I sent Whiplash a link to a site that has the actual fonts used by Winston Cup teams that you can download. I can't find the link right now. Maybe Whiplash can hook us up.

That mean the roof on my browning car is wrong.:(

Here is that link Ace gave me.

http://www.cupcars.org/cupcars/fonts.htm

I do believe however that I used a big thick font on my computer, and used the stroke command to make it thicker.

If you want your car redone on high res. Send me the decal and I will see what I can do.

Ace I have a question.
If I create a checker flag to use use for the rear end of the car. How can I import that into photshop so I can use it in a gradient level? I want to use it in the transparent fade.

Thanks

I never noticed it on your other car. But, it's no biggie. Just giving you some FYI.

For the checkered flag, you'll probably have to select one end of it and feather the selection alot. The go to Layer, Add Layer Mask, Hide Selection. You'll have to play with the selection and feather to get the desired results.

Sounds like I am getting myself into some more complex functions and uses for photoshop. I will have to get started on the checker flag tonight in order to have it finish for the athlon. :)

This is correct. The roof numbers are reversed on the near side so that they can be read right-side-up from the press box when the cars are on the backstretch. Goes back to the old days of manual scoring.

Well personally. I would have liked to leave the numbers off the top. I am tring to cloak myself from the ref.

This checker flag is more time consuming than I originally thought.

Here you go. By the way the numbers need to be fixed, and any suggestion are welcome.
