This (http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,67975,00.html?tw=wn_story_page_prev2) has got to be one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard of. For one thing, it's insanely expensive (who the heck is going to pay hundreds of dollars for this service anyway)? For another thing, leveling up a character is one of the biggest parts of RPG gaming. If you don't want to level up and go through the "grind", then I suggest you stick to FPS games. I don't say that as a dig on any particular group of gamers, but if all you want to do is automatically have an uber character, RPG's and MMO's in particular just aren't for you... ;)

And I thought I was lazy.

This was HUGE on Diablo 2. Not to mention the sale of items on ebay. I'm sure people still do it.

There's always a huge problem with MMORPGs with real currency being turned into game items/currency/time. FFXI has a terrible problem with this, to the point that it is ruining the game. There are characters that do nothing except farm items for money, it is destroying the player economy horribly. Not to mention bought/traded characters with players who have no idea what they are doing, it's a damn shame. The companies running the MMORPGs should step in and do something, but instead they just endorse things such as you posted, just to make MORE money. :(

Yeah that's a pretty dumb idea. Especially when you can buy a hopped up char from EA for Ultima Online for $40.
