Hi Guys,

We are moving to a new house and I considering setting up my old computer as well as the new one. But I have some questions about my DSL connection and how a router works. The main computer will be in an upstairs bedroom. The other computer will be in the basement.

1. Do I need a router to run two computers if they are not online at the same time but use the same DSL connection?

2. Is it possible to run two computers on the same connection at the same time with a router?

3. What if one is a Nascar server?

4. Is it better to bite the bullet and order two separate connections?

There is currently a cable connection in the house right now that uses a router, but I have known of so many people that have trouble with their cable connections. I have never had a moments trouble out of my DSL connection save for the bummy modem they sent me first. Do the answers to the questions above change any for cable modems?

Thanks very much for the advice.
Bob

No.

2. Is it possible to run two computers on the same connection at the same time with a router?

Yes

3. What if one is a Nascar server?

Yup ... I highly recommend Linksys equipment

4. Is it better to bite the bullet and order two separate connections?

Should not have too ... BUT I have had some issues with an FTP server behind my router and other routered users not being able to access it ... still trying to sort that freaky one out

Cool. Thanks so much, Crash. I'll be in touch.

Do the computers have to be running the same version of Windows? My old computer only has 48 megs of ram, probably not enough to run XP. It currently has Win 98.

Thanks,
